Shopping in Lisbon is really worthwhile. In addition to the many international
shops, mega stores and designer boutiques, you will also find best quality
domestic leather articles such as bags, belts and shoes, some of them
handmade. You can also pick up hand-painted tiles, china and crystal
glass articles at most reasonable prices. The Baixa quarter is where
most of the shops are located. Small shops with a personal service make
your shopping experience even more pleasant, but the Baixa is also home
to some large music stores. Other traditional shopping areas are Avenida
de Roma, Alvalade and Campo de Ourique.
On Avenida da Liberdade and in the Chiado you will find many national
and international designer stores. The shopping centres of Amoreiras
and Colombo, the largest shopping centre in the Iberian Peninsula, and
the newly-opened Vasco da Gama shopping centre, offer even more national
and international shops. Other shopping centres and districts are to
be found all over the city. Lisbon's antique shops are generally concentrated
in Rua Dom Pedro V, Rua do Alecrim and Rua de São Bento.
Feira da Ladra (Thieves' Market)
This large, crowded flea market has every conceivable article, new or
second-hand, you could ever want. The name of the market implies that
some of the vendors have stolen the merchandise they sell. True or not,
the market attracts some seedy characters, so watch out for pickpockets.
Be sure to bargain.
