Situated about 50 meters below the main monastery
complex, the Hermitage "Casa da Luz" is a medieval watermill
built on the site of a much older building, There is evidence that it
was a toll on the coast road in the middle ages, and perhaps a watchtower
and lighthouse .The building may even have been part of a very ancient
fortification system, perhaps a Celtic castre, protecting a settlement
in the valley behind from access from the sea.
|
| The building was completely rebuilt in
2002, exactly on the existing ruins. The structure respects the medieval
volumes, the only concessions made concern the guests comfort. The rooms
are small and cosy as are the adjoining sitting rooms. The decoration
is simple and refined. The views towards the ocean and the wild valley
below are breathtaking. The house is suitable for rent either as individual
suites or as a selfcatering unit. In the case of selfcatering, a fully
equipped kitchen is available. Each suite can accommodate two people plus an extra bed in the living areas. |

The hermitage is comprised of three small suites.
Each suite has a bedroom, sitting room and private bathroom .Two of
them have a dinning space. The ocean suite has a large balcony and deck
towards the ocean. The riverside suite and the lighthouse suite have
private outside sitting areas, one by the river and the other in the
old lighthouse.

The hermitage has central heating and the riverside
suite has a fireplace and bread oven in the living area, formally the
old kitchen. Breakfast can either be taken in the main house or delivered
to the hermitage in the morning. There are tea and coffee making facilities
in each suite. There is maid service every day, twice a week in the
case of selfcatering.

At the time of the monastery, "Casa da Luz" was a hermitage, maybe the name came from the nearby lighthouse or from the spiritual enlightenment found there. It is known that alchemy was practiced in the region !!!. By its situation, slightly isolated from the rest of the Convent, "Casa da Luz" is a place of perfect peace. A place to rest and meditate, to reunite with nature and with oneself. |

We draw your attention to the fact that the access to "Casa
da Luz" is along a sloping path and quite a few stairs, downhill,
about 50 meters from the main building . It is of no problem in normal
conditions, but may prove difficult or strenuous for some people.
Bulky or heavy suitcases could be a problem. We do not provide
baggage service. However, we can provide a relay to store too bulky
suitcases in the Convent. |
