Places to Visit
Mafra - The small town of Mafra is dominated by the Convent, a huge monument which includes a monastery, a royal palace and a church, containing aproximately 880 rooms and 300 monks´ cells.
Alcobaça - Alcobaça grew around a moorish castle and then a christian abbey,: between these two, a clutter of medieval looking streets and ornamented churches like those of Misericórdia and Nossa Senhora da Conceição remind us of its ancient history. The abbey has been declared by the UNESCO as a World Heritage monument and in it lie the richly ornamented tombs of the legendary lovers King Pedro and his murdered mistress Inês.
Batalha - On the way to Leiria, turning a bend on the road, the sight that meets the astonished traveller´s eyes is the monumental monastery of Batalha, a masterpiece of Portuguese gothic architecture. The abbey dominates all the town, and although some disagree of the hotel unit set next to it, there are still interesting 18th-century houses to be seen, with porches and guilhotine windows, besides the Mother Church with a fine manueline portal.
Obidos - Ressembling an open-air museum, this walled medieval town has been preserved to look like a picture-postcard, with its monuments, narrow winding streets and white-washed houses with windows and terraces full of flowers.
