This is a short course with nine holes, all of them Par 3, designed by David Thomas. His most famous project is the "Brabazon Course " at The Belfry, near Birmingham, England. That course has had the honour of hosting the Ryder Cup no less than three times, in 1985, 89 and 93. This, the world's most important golfing event, is a twice-yearly meeting of European and U.S. teams. Many golfers will be surprised that a course just 970 metres long could be so complete and challenging - a real test for champions. In order to play this course to Par (27) you will be faced with a series of obstacles from the first right through to the final hole. In addition, Vale de Milho, situated near Carvoeiro, is visually a very attractive course, with waterfalls and wonderful views over the sea. Pro's Playing Tips Holes range in length from 60 meters to 164meters, but with attractive water hazards throughout, players must think carefully about what club should be used. Bunkers and greens are virtually the same as on an 18 hole layout, so playing out of the sand and putting are suitably emphasised. The second hole is a prime example of what the course is all about. There is a waterfall coming from the left to a large lake on the right. If you think you can carry that, there is not so much of a a problem. But it can be daunting and many will choose to "lay up" and look only for a bogey, or a good chip and putt to make the par. For the remainder, the fourth is tricky because you play from an elevated tee to a green which is much lower down. Visually foreshortened, club selection changes from second to second in the mind's eye. Approaching the clubhouse, the ninth at 134 meters has a fairway that is relatively narrow and kicks off right. The green is well protected by bunkers, and the terrace of the very busy clubhouse extends out above, making approach shots and putting very self conscious matters.
